The Third Friday Book Group selection for September is Minnesota 1918: When FLU, FIRE, and WAR ravaged the state, by Star Tribune writer Curt Brown.
In 1918 there was a series of three threats to Minnesotans that tested the very survival of life as they knew it. First was World War I, taking young men to military training and fighting fields of Europe. During wartime, with resources in short supply, the worst influenza outbreak became a global pandemic. The third disaster resulted from one of the dryest summers in MN history, and what resulted was a rapidly-spreading forest fire, claiming several lives in its path. The book describes the devasting losses, the heroism, the courage and determination of so many people. All are welcome to join our discussion on Friday September 21 at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments will be served, and conversation promises to be enthusiastic!
