Senior Ministry

We promote service and growth opportunities for seniors as a key element of our inter-generational connections at Good Shepherd. Including coordinating volunteers for the PCYC Rocking Reader program at lower Lake Harriet school.

Rocking Readers

Good Shepherd volunteers have been reading with students at Lake Harriet School for over a decade in the Rocking Reader program developed by Plymouth Christian Youth Center, and will continue to do so during this school year. The goals of the program are to build early literacy skills, an enjoyment of reading and a positive relationship with a caring adult.

Volunteers are paired with first grade children to provide them an opportunity for reading and conversation in one-on-one reading sessions within the school. Each volunteer commits to spending one hour per week reading with the same four-six children from October to May. This year our volunteers will be reading in one of the two first grade classrooms, either Tuesday morning, Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning. Additional volunteers would be warmly welcomed, whether to read on a weekly basis at the Wednesday morning time or to be available as an occasional substitute for one of the regular readers.

Heritage Sunday

The Heritage Committee hosted Heritage Sunday on October 2. We celebrated the contributions of older adults in the congregation, now and in the past and share lunch together. We are blessed with such a rich heritage! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
